Marjorie Barnes was born in Harlem, New York City. Although in her youth she participated in many school and church choirs, she took courses for dance and drama. Her first Broadway role was as an actress in the play ‘Freeman’. The New York press immediately signaled her as a promising talent. Because of her strong vocal talent and stage personality she played in several musicals, including Hair. In addition, she did much television work.
In 1975 she was chosen among hundreds of candidates as the new lead singer of the pop group ‘The Fifth Dimension’. During many intensive tours she shared the stage with Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and Billy Eckstein, among others. They toured all major venues around the world.
As a jazz singer, she was often seen in the major clubs of New York and Europe.
In 1978 she was invited as the lead singer of the musical ’Bubbling Brown Sugar’, in London, touring all over the world. In 1981 she married with a Dutch artist moving to Holland. She was for one year the vocalist for ‘The Skymasters’ and then she worked in the Netherlands and Germany with the orchestras of Jerry Van Rooyen and Peter Herbolzhiemer. She was also appointed as a singing teacher at the conservatories of Hilversum and the Hague. In 1994 she toured herself through theaters in the Netherlands and Belgium and the program Basic Black. Meanwhile she provided her fans with jazz performances at home and abroad, with her own trio and as a guest at renowned big bands and orchestras. This is a CD with fourteen beautifull ballads. Music for daydreamers and loners but also for those who need relaxation at the end of a busy day. Romance and dramatic go together here hand in hand.
